Getting started How to build a personal brand on Instagram after 35
If you've spent ten or twenty years getting good at something, Instagram can feel like it belongs to someone else. It doesn't. For experts, starting later is often an advantage.
Why experience is your advantage
Most content on Instagram is opinion. Yours is experience. When you explain something you've seen hundreds of times at work, people can tell. That's what makes them save, share and follow.
One of our members is a paediatrician with 30+ years of practice. The account grew from 19.3K to 400K followers by explaining child health simply. No trends, no dancing. Just what years of practice had already taught.
Step 1: Decide who you're talking to
"Everyone who might need me" is not an audience. Write one line that names who you help and with what. For example: "I help women over 40 understand their hormones and thyroid." Every reel should speak to that person.
Step 2: Pick one format and repeat it
You don't need ten formats. You need one that works for you, done well and often. Common ones that work for experts:
- Myth busting: what people in your field get wrong
- Simple how-tos: one useful thing people can try today
- Stories from work: what years of practice taught you
Step 3: Treat every reel as data
A reel that flops isn't a verdict on you. Look at where people stopped watching. If they left in the first 3 seconds, the hook needs work. If they stayed till the end, make more like it.
"Every video that seems bad is not a bad video. It's just data." Deepanshu Nagpal, 100x Engine member
Step 4: Make it fit your calendar
You don't need to post every day. A few focused hours a week, batched on one afternoon, is enough to stay consistent alongside a full-time job.
You can start from anywhere
Members start at 0, 5K or 50K followers. One started with 111. What matters is a clear position, a format that works and the patience to learn from your numbers.
